The National Book Award

The finalists for the National Book Award features from longtime award winners like 76-year-old Robert A. Caro to debut novelists and YA authors.

Carrie Arcos of Out or Reach is among the surprised with a letter anouncing her nomination.
Other nominees include Pulitzer winner Junot Diaz with his short story collection This is how you lose her, and also YA author Steve Sheinkin's The World's Most Dangerous Weapon.

Fiction and first novels that deal with the war in Iraq:
- Dave Eggers' for "A Hologram for the King"
- Louise Erdrich, "The Round House"
- Ben Fountain, "Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk"
- Kevin Powers' "The Yellow Birds"

- "Bewilderment: New Poems and Translations" by David Ferry
- "Heavenly Bodies" by Cynthia Huntington
- "Fast Animal" by Tim Seibles
- "Night of the Republic" by Alan Shapiro
- "Meme" by Susan Wheeler
